Awesome CompizFusion Plugin: Cube Atlantis

Friday, July 06, 2007

People are quickly discovering all the awesome plugins of the new CompizFusion. One of coolest plugins, in my opinion, is the new "Cube Atlantis". What the plugin does is basically render a few fish, sharks, whales, and dolphins in your desktop cube! It is quite fun to watch :D

Check out this vid:

Sorry about the horrible quality, xvidcap really lags things up a bit :) (the actual performance is excellent!) Here are a few screen shots that I took, on the right you can see the various settings available for customization under the compiz-config settings manager:

The settings available for customization include:
  • Number of fish (1-100)
  • Different color fish (Yes or No)
  • Fish Size (1-10000)
  • Shark Size (1-10000)
  • Dolphin Size (1-10000)
  • Whale Size (1-10000)
To install this plugin, along with a wealth of other entertaining and useful plugins for CompizFusion, select the "compiz-fusion-plugins-extra" package through your favorite package manager or apt. A great guide to installing CompizFusion on Ubuntu can be found on the Ubuntu Forums.

* For those finding the theme portrayed above appealing, the skydome wallpaper can be found here, and the desktop wallpaper here.

That's actually quite nice, are those different desktop views on each side of the cube?

nice eye candy, but maybe it can be made useful by making the attributes of the fish reflect the attributes of the system.. so many possible variations, should be user configurable.. how bout the scale/rotation/translation/texture/
animation sequence/animation frame/
animation speed/species/color/opacity
etc etc of each sea object be able to mean something.. so you can glance at your fishtank, and know status.. then of course, you can also make it your screensaver..
in addition to fish, it would be fun to add things like seaweed, ship wreckage, diver, etc.

this is a nice open metaphor. what would you like to visualize with it?

@ miek

I posted some links :) Hope that helps.

I too see great potential for this plugin. I really hope that the developers take this further. I mean, what would be cooler than having virtual fish in your desktop react to window events or such. There is such much that can still be done, it makes me wish that I had the programming knowledge to do so!

Quite neat, but I was expecting that wallpaper to be part of the animated cube. A few water shaders and/or textured layers, some more high detail fish, and it'd make an awesome wallpaper/cubefiller!

You should have a fish for each process, with size for mem usage, and color for cpu usage...etc

How did you get rid of the National Geographic banner in the cube background?

Hey Alex,
To get the cube atlantis plugin, you just have to install the compiz-fusion-plugins-unofficial or the compiz-fusion-plugins-unsupported package (don't remember which one). If you don't find these, then use trevino's repository
Email me @ linnerd40 AT gmail DOT com if you need more help.
