"KDE until release 3 runs mainly on unix/X11 based platforms because the basic gpl'ed Qt(TM) library was only available for those platforms. QT release 4 now is available under a gpl license also on Windows(TM) and MAC OSX (TM), which gives KDE release 4 the chance to be available also on Windows and MAC OSX."
