Torrents Suck

Friday, May 12, 2006

Yesterday, I spent about 4 hours trying to get the SuSE Linux 10.1 torrent to work. In those four hours I managed to download only 900MB out of 3.7GB! Not to mention that Ktorrent kept crashing (odd). This morning, I tried downloading the ISOs and I manged to download the first 2 CDs in less than an hour! So, for all of you waiting to get SuSE 10.1, get the ISOs, they are a heck of alot faster than the torrent*.
*Note* This may also depend on your internet connection! So what works for me, may not work for you, I just like to think it will : )

Amen, torrents in theory can work wonders. The problem is, you usually have more leeching people than seeding people which results in a very slow download. Now if you have DSL or god-forbid dial-up, those torrents are still going to be faster than what you could download directly. Though if you have a cable connection, you have absolutely no way to put that connection to use with torrents. What could take minutes with direct download could take hours.

the problem is that most people's upload speed sucks, it's always between 1/4 to 1/8 of their download speed.
so you get poor dl speeds

Torrents have sucked, do suck, and always will suck. I get so damn tired of torrent apologists giving me BS about finding torrents with "more seeders than leechers" and "opening my torrent port."

Guess what: They're still slow no matter what. They'll never hold a candle to a good old fashioned direct download. They're only used so much because pirate sites are cheap when it comes to bandwidth.

MY uploads are not slow. In fact they are faster by about 3 - 5 times than my download speed. And if I slow my upload limit, guess what? my download slows down to the point where it would take a week to get. Now all this wouldn't be a problem if i didn't live in a country where you have extremely limited bandwidth. I have to cancel downloads because the amount my uploads take up would put me over the limit. I seriously have little panic attacks watching the number of mbs rise and rise, just hpoing i can watch my little half hour show without wasting a gig uploading. (i'm serious). Pathetic huh.

I agree. Torrents are such garbage. I let something run on a relatively quick connection overnight. I only had 1/4 of a 4.2gb file. Beyond that I can't find a good site that will just let me download the damn thing without paying fees for god knows what.

Curse torrents, they leave us who actually have a decent connection to ponder punching our computers.

where I live, Romania, I can download almost anything with over 1MBPS from private trackers, and even from public trackers if it's a very new movie or so..
