After a bit of "tweaking" You had the desktop looking like the old Gnome look instead of the "slab" look.

How did you do that?

I am a bit of a noob as the term is used so can ya help me a bit?

mp3 is supported out of the box in suse 10.2. realplayer is installed by default, and therefore all other media players can play mp3's also because REAL paid the license fees, and the fee only needs to be paid once. I think that it is important to distinguish between the use of YAST as a package manager (sometimes worse than absolutely horrid and tediously, mindnumbingly, dying in your chair slow) and YAST as a set of utilities to configure your system. In the latter role, I think that YAST is probably the best, single solution out there. (I think that Xandros and PCLinux have both developed the beginnings of a central configuration tool, but I have not used the distributions recently to know for sure.)

To handle package management, I have found that the smart package manager using yast-, yum- and other rpm-based repositories does a much better, faster job -- while still allowing the native tools to keep track of what has and has not been installed.

I to am a former SUSE user. I, like you loved 9.2, enjoyed/endured through 10.0, and gave up on 10.1. I then discovered PCLinuxOS and have been very happy since. Their control center is just as powerful, if not more, as YaST, but it is so much faster! If you haven't tried PCLOS, I heartily recommend it. I won't go into the controversy because it is just too depressing. B)

I am using both openSuSe (10.2 as well as 10.3 Alpha 5) and Ubuntu (Feisty Fawn). Each distributions are different (I feel comfortable Ubuntu on my limited resource systems since it consumes less memory with default configurations, openSuSE takes 400MB vs Ubuntu takes 225MB; though both can be controlled) and these two are my most favorite distributions.

Problem with my sound card aside (with Ubuntu my sound card is perfect which is weird), openSUSE is perfect for light use and development use.

What Novell does with Microsoft is their problem, as long as they give my GNU/Linux without much forking.

Khudos to openSUSE Team.

I'm a fan of Novell, and all the good things they have done for the opensource community. While I don't agree with their agreement with Microsoft, and appreciate ubuntu and others standing up and saying NO to Microsoft, I don't feel I can't write off Novell yet. i think they still have many things they can do for the community, and it will be interesting to see what Novell does in the future. For now I use OpenSuse 10.2, it works great in my work's MS network, athenticating via Active Directory, and using Evolution to connect with our Exchange server. I have yet to find another distro that made integration with a Microsoft network so easy. I just wish I could convince management to dump Microsoft completely.

Thanks for your comment. I am in great support of what you do. You are educated on the issue of the Novell deal and can make educated decisions about what you fight for. It is other members of the community who seem to just go with the crowd and say "Novell sucks, openSUSE sucks" just because a few uninformed people did so. Your knowledge of what is going on the Linux world continues to impress me! Thank you for sharing this information! Keep doing what you are doing, it is people like you who make a difference.

To speed up YaST you should deselect the pattern “Enterprise Software Management” and select “openSUSE Software Management” in the category “Base Technologies”

For the record; I have installed openSUSE 10.2 on one desktop and two laptops, all in dual boot and with Kaffeine without any kind of problems.

I am using SUSE since version 9.3 which I think is still the best. Versions 10.0 was still Ok but 10.1 was a disaster.
Version 10.2 now is on the right track, but I still have problems to get the sound system working. I am not able to install Kaffeeine, the drivers for the Fritz Card ISDN & DSL are not part of the dostribution any more. Realplayer is also not part of the distri any more.

I also had problems while installing it under a multiboot enviroment. The old versions did well here.
During installation I selected "No bootloader" but Suse10.2 still corrupted the MBR.

I will wait for version 10.3 and use my 9.3.

For the record, Shane and I at BoycottNovell.com have said dozens of times before that we appreciate the developers' work (Opensuse) and we only blame the executives for taking the money and allowing their developers to get a bad name. I was among those in the opensuse community at the time.

The developers were not part of the this decision, with the exception of a few prominent ones such as Miguel de Icaza, who is a VP. It was all done secretly. Jeremy Allison knew about it and protested against the sneaky, 90th-minute inclusion of patent covenant elements. They were /not/ part of the original deal which was negotiated. As for Nat Friedman and de Icaza, the story remains a mystery. As you know, de Icaza has strong ties with Port 25 and the Microsoft culture (he even had a job interview there). He does not necessarily respresent Opensuse devs as a whole. Not many of them care for Mono (.NET), which is patents-encumbered development technology and controversial framework to many Linux distributors other than Novell /et al/.
